    Liner Notes

    Dear Mozart,
The world will soon enter its third century of celebrating your genius, forever seeking delight in playing, recording, singing, whistling and dancing to your charming melodies. We will never stop listening with awe to the passionate performances that celebrate the divine power of your music.

Science has proven that your music makes children smarter, reduces stress, and even helps plants grow faster. Your charismatic music soothes, uplifts and transcends in our minds and fuels the passion in ours hearts.

I would describe your music as brilliant yet soothing, mature and sophisticated yet innocent, humorous and playful yet passionate and moving. The harmonious balance of these dynamics is what gives your music the power to transcend the earthly limits of geography, societal preferences and time.

I chose to perform 12 variations on an Original Theme, because I tend to be drawn toward pieces that do not receive as much of the spotlight. This composition is peaceful, graceful and charming. These variations were composed in 1786 in Vienna, several months after the premiere of Marriage of Figaro and exactly nine months after you composed the Rondo in D, a delightful, uplifting composition. The charm and simplicity of the Rondo are irresistible.

The tension of the minor melody combined with the contrasting moods gives the fantasy in D minor its poeticism and passion. The same can be said about the suspended melodies heard in the Sonata in B-flat, particularly in the first and second movements. I have performed both the solo version and the violin and piano version of this Sonata numerous times. The beauty of the sonata in E-flat is conveyed through simple, unostentatious lines, and I find that the unusual sonata form refreshing. You composed this piece in Munich around the time of your nineteenth birthday. Your creative maturity at such a young age is inexplicable and wondrous.

For this album, I intentionally selected pieces you composed at various times throughout your life, because I am fascinated how they do not reflect your age. It is clear that your brilliance was not bound by time.

I hope, dear Mozart, that you will enjoy my performance. It is truly an honor to express myself through the inspiration of your music.

    With utmost reverence,
    Tomoko Hagiwara
