    Song Lyrics

Ah, that guy you hooked up with, you know he was nuts, Annie.
Though you heard the truth, you could feel the lies in your guts, Annie.
His heart was just a parking place for undelivered dreams.
(Or is that really just the way it seems?)

I recall that slide guitar you held in your clutch, Annie,
And a child who smiled at the tenderness of your touch, Annie.
A desert flower, you drew your power from deep within the ground,
Trying to make some sense of what you've found.

    [Chorus]
    Down, down, down, down
    Down to Jonestown
Down to where the jungle rivers flow
    Down, down, down, down
    Down to Jonestown
Lay your body down and don't let go

When that cat with the platinum tongue took off with the goods, Annie,
And you followed him like a pioneer to the woods, Annie,
I must admit I had my doubts, but I threw them all away:
I figured you'd step in and save the day.

Then the story broke and they spoke of how you'd been found, Annie.
I could hear the scream in my head, but there was no sound, Annie.
Your finger touched the trigger and the barrel looked at you.
There was nothing left for anyone to do.

I don't believe it for one minute
(Is it true? Is it true?)
It was him not you that did it
(Could it be? Could it be?)
    Underneath the starry skies
I ask again, then I realize
I won't be hearing back again from you.

    Down, down, down, down
    Down to Jonestown
Down to where the jungle rivers flow
    Down, down, down, down
    Down to Jonestown
Lay your body down and don't let go
Lay your body down and don't let go
Lay your body down and don't let go

Ah, that guy you hooked up with, you know he was nuts, Annie.
But before I could look, your book was opened and shut, Annie.
There's really just one question, now, that lingers on my lips:
Had I walked that final mile inside your shoes
Would I do the same damn thing if I were you?

    Down, down, down, down
    Down to Jonestown
Down to where the jungle rivers flow
    Down, down, down, down
    Down to Jonestown
Lay your body down and don't let go
Lay your body down and don't let go
Lay your body down and don't let go

    Song Notes

'In late 1978, the world was rocked by the news of mass murder and suicide in the jungles of Guyana in South America. Word spread that a California politician and his entourage had been attacked while investigating a religious cult community that had transplanted there, and that most of the cult's 900+ members were dead.

This song is about Annie Moore, my dear friend who died that day alongside other members of Jim Jones' People's Temple. The unbelievable had occurred, and the world struggled to answer why. Those like myself who knew Annie were met with an even harder task, because we knew she was not a crazed, heartless fanatic with deep emotional scars, but a sensible, loving, down to earth, highly principled human being whom we all admired. In the end, the most poignant questions were those whose answers were least in reach. May that unexplainable day, and that beautiful person, never be forgotten.'
