"Silicon Valley's Full Spectrum Jazz is a strikingly engaging band that illuminates ripe emotional colors and a generosity of inspired jazz savoir faire. Dig the ensemble's fluency and the insistent way it swings with vitality and excitement. The individuality of featured solo voices contributes significantly to the band's equation of dedication, musical wherewithal and the sheer joy of playing. Moreover, the selection of appealing arrangements reflects essential good taste in big band culture. For a threshold recording, 'First Time Out' is a notable one, indeed. A work in progress, the band surely deserves watchful attention. What a joyful trip it is to be an ear-witness to FSJ. Warning: don't get left out!!"
~ Dr. Herb Wong, Jazz Historian / Music Producer
Silicon Valley's Full Spectrum Jazz (FSJ) was founded in the fall of 1996, when saxophonist Fred Urrutia brought together fellow saxophonist Dan Dierkes and trumpeter Roger Levinson for dinner at Ho Chow, a popular Chinese restaurant in Fremont, CA. The three decided there was room in Silicon Valley for another big band with a charter to perform a wide variety of musical styles ranging from the '30s to the '90s. Drawing personnel from the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley in particular, FSJ has become a well known ensemble performing at area jazz festivals, venues, private parties and major Silicon Valley corporate events.
Many members work by day at well known Silicon Valley corporations, such as Silicon Graphics, Chip Express, Sun Microsystems, Microcide Pharmaceuticals, Exar Corp., Cadence Design Systems, Hewlett-Packard, and Fujitsu as engineers and executives. Other members are well known San Francisco Bay Area professional musicians. Together, these members have created FSJ, which quickly became the Bay Area's hottest, new big band in years.
True to our original charter, FSJ has recorded "First Time Out," our first CD, as a sampling of our wide range of styles. With blues, ballads, straight-ahead swing, bossa, and salsa, FSJ presents here a collection of styles spanning over 60 years in the evolution of big band jazz. A special Note of thanks to those who helped make this project a success:
A special thanks to Fred Berry for his invaluable experience, insight and direction to FSJ as Musical Director and Mentor. Tom Carr and the staff of the Music Annex recording studio (Menlo Park, CA) for providing a world-class, state-of-the-art recording environment. Frank Moura and Menlo-Atherton High School for logistics support.Alisa Clancy ('Morning Cup Of Jazz" program) and Bay Area Jazz Superstation KCSM FM91.1 (San Mateo, CA) for their ongoing support of FSJ.Most of all, a special thanks to our families, friends, and supporters for helping us achieve this level of performance.
