Biography
|
|
|
Even on island time, twenty-five years is a long way "up the road". Tom Funkhouser and Whistler Doug Van Nostrand first ran into Dore Coller in Coral Bay in the US Virgin Islands back in 1979. When they did, they had no idea that the Cow Bay CruzBoys would survive into the next century to become the definitive Caribbean R&B band of the Bay Area.
In the last few years, the Cow Bay CruzBoys have played private engagements almost exclusively. Now, with the release of their new CD, ‘Island Time’, and a lot of pressure from their fans, the Cow Bay CruzBoys are looking for a few select venues to play.
After years of being 'big fish in a small pond', the Cow Bay CruzBoys headed back for the mainland. Dore Coller was the first to return. He had spent previous years working as a lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist in the Bay Area with members of such bands as the Youngbloods, Big Brother, Van Morrison, Maria Muldaur, Montreaux, and Jana Herzen. Tom Funkhouser was the next to come back to the continent. After a brief recording stint in Manhattan, he returned to his home base of Mill Valley to take on lead vocals, rhythm guitar and steel drums. With the blend of their two voices and songwriting talents back together, the Cow Bay CruzBoys were riding again!
While Whistler Doug stays ‘on the rock’ and continues to send up material, Tom and Dore have been turning some of the finest Bay Area local musicians into CruzBoys. There’s David Phillips on pedal steel and lead guitar, who has played with such notables as the Potato Eaters, Charlie Hunter, Jack West, Jim Campilongo, Keith Richards and Tom Waits. Bassist Ned Doherty can be seen moonlighting with Carmaig DeForest, Mushroom, and Jana Herzen when he’s not in uniform as a CruzBoy. When drummer Eddie Sassin isn’t busy as a CruzBoy, he has been seen around town with Undercover Ska. Last but not least is percussionist Paul Cicco, who has played with many great artists such as Bobbie McFerrin, and more recently, Worlds Collide.
Although they’ve been working mostly casuals in recent years, the Cow Bay CruzBoys have kept up a schedule of public performances at various venues in the North Bay. A few of the more notable dates have been a featured performance at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley, and opening for Eric Burdon, Dave Mason, Elvin Bishop and Jesse Colin Young at the Sausalito Arts Festival and other summer events. They’ve also played several times at the Harvest Festivals at Whole Foods in Marin and Berkeley. The waterfront, however, will always be the Cow Bay CruzBoys' home, playing yacht clubs and regattas, even a 3-year engagement at Margaritaville.
Though born in the Caribbean, the Cow Bay CruzBoys are just as comfortable bringing across a Jimmy Buffett tune or reggae beat as they are a blues shuffle, not to mention country, funk, or straight ahead rock’n’roll. In fact, there’s very little these boys don’t play, electric or acoustic; they often take on any request that the crowd can muster. With the Cow Bay CruzBoys, the audience will feel as if they have been transported to a tropical paradise, or anywhere else they’d like to go "up the road", for that matter. |

Wow, talk about cross-cultural - the CowBayCruzBoys certainly fit that description. Conceived in the Virgin Islands and thriving in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Cow Bay CruzBoys add new dimensions to the music of the Carribean Islands with their own brand of spices and R&B flair. Although the band has a strong reggae influence, they can easily draw on diverse elements such as blues, country, swing, and more. While I would imagine that this group puts on a great live show, I'm grateful, at least that their music is available on recordings - fun stuff! The musicians are top notch and have performed with an extremely impressive roster of well-known rock and jazz musicians over the years. This is music that will have you swaying to the tropical grooves and positive vibrations.
